OUR STORY

The Hipcamp story began with a wave.
It has become a movement.

Hipcamp founder and CEO Alyssa Ravasio set out to find a beach campsite where she could watch the first sunrise of 2013. After hours of searching dozens of websites, she successfully found California’s Central Coast at Andrew Molera State Park. But, upon arrival, she discovered that all her research failed to disclose an essential detail: it was an amazing place to catch a wave. As an avid surfer, she was frustrated to learn that she should have brought her board.

And so the idea for Hipcamp was born. Alyssa set out to build technology to help people get outside, connect with nature, and find the right spots for them.

Hipcamp soon pivoted from focusing on public land camping, where finding and booking stays was often cumbersome, to opening private land camping as a way to broaden access to outdoor recreation.

What began as a quest to get people outside has become a movement to use recreation to fuel the restoration of wild places and protect biodiversity. Hipcamp believes in the power of biophilia: as people spend time outdoors they fall in love with nature, and people protect what they love. Recreation also creates a regenerative engine that supports those who support the land. By helping people get outside, Hipcamp is changing culture and helping the planet too.

MEET ALYSSA

Alyssa Ravasio is the founder and CEO of Hipcamp.

Alyssa Ravasio is the founder and CEO of Hipcamp, a global online platform that brings the sharing economy to one of the planet's most plentiful resources—land. Built on the belief that getting outside should be simple, Hipcamp partners with private landowners across the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom to create new spaces for recreation, increasing access to the outdoors while providing sustainable revenue to protect nature. To date, Hipcamp has unlocked access to more than 4 million acres of private land and helped people enjoy more than 6 million nights under the stars.

Alyssa has received industry recognition for her achievement. She has served on the Outdoor Industry Association's Recreation Advisory Council and in 2022 she was recognized by Outside Business Journal as one of the 20 most influential people in the outdoor industry.

Alyssa earned her bachelor's degree in Digital Democracy and Complexity Science from the University of California, Los Angeles. She lives in the wilds of Marin County with her husband and young son, and one of her deepest passions is shaping how the internet impacts our humanity and our planet.

“I founded Hipcamp because I wanted it to be simpler to find a campsite, but I’ve come to realize that the income from outdoor recreation can play a critical role in supporting the restoration and protection of our planet’s biodiversity,” said Ravasio. “Recreation creates new income streams to support those who are supporting the land, and I’m thrilled to share how this regenerative model can transform the way we think about sustaining land trusts and keeping private lands from development.”
